The Largest Primate In The World On The Verge Of Extinction

Eastern Congo gorilla primate is the largest living primate in the world. The number of these gorillas is on critically low level and they are one step ahead of extinction.

According to the report of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is estimated that worldwide there are less than 5,000 of these gorillas. The main reason is the illegal hunting of these gorillas. The new list of endangered species, status of these gorillas is changed from “endangered” to “critically endangered”.

According to “IUCN”, in the last two decades the number of these gorillas fell by 70 percent, and the current political instability in areas of their habitats will be difficult to prevent this decline. The situation is very bad for the monkeys, because four of the six major types of monkeys – the eastern gorilla, the western gorilla, orangutan and the Borneo Sumatran orangutan is listed as critically endangered. This means that all these species are face a huge risk of extinction in the immediate future.

Eastern Gorillas are divided into two subspecies: the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla Grauer) and the mountain gorilla. It is believed that today are about 880 mountain gorillas. Most of eastern gorillas are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. But the recent civil war, government corruption and political uncertainty affected on the situation in the country and gorillas that live there.

Experts are hope that if stability returns and if ecotourism grows – as is the case in Rwanda and Uganda, it might help to keep the number of gorillas stable writes “CBS News”.Although the situations are not the best, hopes are corroborated by recent successes in protecting the great panda, when “IUCN”, reduce the status of the panda from “endangered” to “vulnerable”, which is a step in the right direction.

The number of big pandas has increased by 17 percent in the last 10 years, and two thirds of the population today live in highly protected reserves in China. Experts believe that in the world now live about 2000 Giant Panda.

Also one of the major problems for this primate is that need to find a solution are climate change.
